Q. My 3 year old son has glue ear. Is there a homeopathic remedy for this? He is not in pain but it has been going on for a long time now. I have been told that he could have grommets put in but I want to avoid surgery if possible.

A. Glue ear (also called secretory otitis media) is caused by a build up of fluid in the middle ear. Often there is no pain but the child will usually experience some degree of deafness. There are several homeopathic remedies which may help but I would suggest that you see a professional homeopath in order to choose the right one, especially if this is a long term problem. To advise on the information you have given, you might try Kali Muriaticum, which is indicated if there is no postnasal discharge of mucus, or any sign of loose cattarh. If there is evidence of respiratory congestion and/or postnasal drip, especially if yellow in colour, then you could try Hydrastis, although you probably won't find that remedy in your local chemist. Glue ear has been linked to a high intake of dairy products, so if your son drinks a lot of milk it would be a good idea to cut down heavily in that area. Herbalists may recommend warm castor oil, garlic oil, or mullein oil as ear drops, gently plugged with cotton wool. Homeopathic treatment is ideal for children of your son's age, as they usually respond quickly to the right remedy - and the tiny pills taste like sweeties!
